About The Society
In 1962, descendants of John, Henry and Richard Townsend, three 17th-century settlers of Long Island, New York founded the Townsend Society of America to collect and preserve genealogical and historical materials.
Since that time, the Society has expanded its mission to include all immigrants named Townsend, their descendants, and Townsend-related history across the country and beyond.
Since arriving on these shores in the early 1600s, Townsends have been involved in every aspect of American history. Descendants can understand the events of our past by studying their ancestors who participated in them.
Members of the Society share interests in genealogy, family history, and local history as well as American and world history. We live in all parts of the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
