Haplogroup I1 Predicted, Shorthand M-253 Haplogroup I dates to 23,000 years ago or longer. Lineages not in branches I1a, I1b or I1c are found distributed at low frequency throughout Europe. My Situation The earliest known ancestor was thought to be George Townsend, Bremhill Wiltshire, England in the late 1700s. But after comparing records with Martin Wiltshire, with whom there is a 36/37 match it was determined that they were related. This is how DNA testing worked for Peter, "I found an entry in the church records in Calne, Wiltshire, England which stated that George Townsend was the ‘baseborn' son of Ann Townsend and the father was reputed to be Richard Wiltshire!!" "Our problem for several years was that our George was supposedly born in the early 1800's, not as early as the 1790's! It was not until a new helper joined our research team that he discovered that the 1841 census rounded off (down) ages and that the subsequent 1851 and 1861 census showed our George was born in the mid-1790's. So we decided to have another look at baseborn George and hence the DNA comparison with a member of the Wiltshire family. "The irony is that my cousin Desmond Townsend had searched for over thirty years trying to break down the brick wall, even going so far as to phone the Wiltshire family back in 1973 and ask if Richard Wiltshire had ever married an Ann Townsend - they never phoned him back." "I have been working on the family tree for about four years and applied the DNA high tech research tool. I am still on cloud nine because we have added another 150 years to our tree." (George was born 4 Aug 1796, baptized 9 Oct 1796). Web site at www.Peter.TownsendDNAProject.com
