Maryland History and Genealogy
The Diary of Richard H. Townsend Offered by The Townsend Society Of America

The Diary of Richard H. Townsend, compiled 1851-1879, contains historical, biographical, and genealogical information for 1683-1879 with an index by John Shotwell Townsend.
In 1937 the Works Progress Administration of Maryland at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, Maryland transcribed the original manuscript that was in the possession of John S. Townsend (grandson of the diarist.)

The Townsend Society received a copy of the diary from member William Dumond Townsend who had purchased it in an online auction. This hardbound copy in two volumes is a typescript carbon copy on thin copy paper. The Society found this carbon copy not to be clear enough to scan and make an electronic copy.

Lewis Townsend, President of the Society, then contacted the library and found that they held a three-volume set of the Diary that turned out to be the original WPA typescript (three volumes as the original was typed on regular paper.)

Jeffery Korman, Manager, Maryland Department, Enoch Pratt Free Library, City of Baltimore (designated as the State Library Resource Center) kindly agreed to a loan of the original WPA typescript so that it might be scanned.
